There’s no better way to start tackling those New Year resolutions than with a swim across the famous Bondi Bay. Take up the challenge of the North Bondi Roughwater Ocean Swim – it’s a great way to warm up for the North Bondi Classic. Total of $5000 cash & prizes for major placings PLUS other great prizes.

Eligibility

Persons aged 13 years and above who have adequately trained for the Event.

 

Entry Fees

Under 19 (age on race day) $20

Open $35

Entry Deadlines

Pre-race entries must be received by Friday 4 January 2008 by post or online or by fax. All entries received after this date are considered late entries.

Team Challenge Entries must also be received by 4 January 2008 (no late entries permitted).

Late entry: Late entries will be taken at North Bondi SLSC on Saturday 5 January from 9am to 12 noon and a maximum of 100 late entries will be taken on race day from 7am to 8am.

 

2 Swim Combo Entry only $50

Swimmers have the option of also entering the North Bondi Classic on 10 February and paying only $50 to participate in both swims. You only need to complete one entry form, and mark the “combo option”.

 

Elite Division

Applications to compete in the elite division need to be made to the Race Referee and will be accepted up until race closing date. Elite swimmers are still eligible for their age category prizes.

 

Back of the Pack Group

This division has been created to allow those swimmers who require flippers, snorkels or flotation/wetsuit clothing to complete the course. This group will start 10 minutes behind the last wave. They will not be eligible for any age

group prizes.

 

Team Entry (4 swimmers per team)

All members of a team must enter as individuals, and will thus be eligible for individual prizes. Teams must also submit a separate entry form with the team’s name, and 4 team members names listed. Teams may comprise male and female swimmers. All members of a team must finish. A maximum of 1 Preferred Wave Start swimmer per team. Once team members have entered as individuals, the Team Manager must complete the Team Details form.

 

Course

The distance is approximately 2km, starting off the beach from North Bondi SLSC, swimming to South Bondi and returning. Marker buoys will be positioned to indicate the course.

Cancellation

The Race Referee reserves the right to cancel the Event due to adverse weather, surf or safety conditions. In this case, there will be no rain date, no re-run of the Roughwater Swim. By swim day, North Bondi SLSC has already committed to significant expenditure in order to prepare for the Roughwater Swim. The Club is liable for this expenditure irrespective of whether the swim goes ahead. North Bondi SLSC is a registered charity and a public benevolent institution. In the event of cancellation of the event, entry fees will not be refunded.

 

A decision will be made ASAP on Race day and broadcast on commercial radio and via http://www.northbondisurfclub.com and www.oceanswims.com

 

Safety and Risk

It should be noted that each event is a demanding event and swimmers enter at their own personal risk and are responsible for their physical condition.

 

Motorised rescue craft, oared surf boats, ski and board paddlers will be patrolling the course for the duration of the Event. If a swimmer feels unable to complete the course they should attract the attention of the water safety personnel and assistance will be provided.

 

Swimmers should train for the event and have a medical check prior to the Event. A swimmer deemed incapable of finishing the course may be brought to shore at any time. Any swimmer who does pull out of the race must notify officials on the beach immediately. For the protection and safety of all swimmers, water safety and control is under the authority of North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club at all times.

Race Rules

1.      All swimmers must swim the prescribed course and ensure that their name is marked off the official entrants register at the conclusion of the Roughwater Swim even if they do not

complete the course.

2.      Swimmers must swim in the category for which they are eligible.

3.      All swimmers must wear their prescribed cap, race number and timing device.

4.      A swimmer may not use extraneous aids eg. flippers, snorkels or fl oatation clothing (including wetsuits) or devices (unless they are entered in the Back of the Pack Group).

5.      Any swimmer accompanying an under 15 year aged swimmer will not be eligible for a prize or qualify as an offi cial placegetter.

6.      All swimmers are to behave in a fair and sportsmanlike manner without interference or aggression towards other competitors and any breach of this rule may result in disqualification from the Roughwater Swim.

7.      If in the opinion of an event medical offi cer or a water safety offi cial a competitor is physically or otherwise incapable of starting or completing the Roughwater Swim or has been in the water for an inordinate time such competitor may be disqualified from starting or be removed from the water at any time.

8.      If in the opinion of the Race Referee the weather or swimming conditions are dangerous or unsuitable the Roughwater Swim may be cancelled without notice.

9.      Prize winners must be present to receive their prize.

10.  The decision of the Race Referee is fi nal. Any protests must be made in writing to the Race Referee within 30 minutes of the completion of the Event.

 

 

Risk Warning pursuant to Civil Liability Act 2002 (section 5M)

Ocean swims are demanding and potentially dangerous events. Risks include drowning, natural obstacles,man-made or -controlled obstacles, and marine attack. The Ocean Swim takes place in the open ocean. Swimmers enter at their own risk. You should have a medical check prior to entry, and prepare for the event by training. Water safety craft will patrol the course for the duration of the Ocean Swim. If a swimmer feels unable to proceed further in the swim, the attention of the water safety personnel should be sought.

 

The Ocean Swim organisers cannot guarantee your safety. The Ocean Swim organisers reserve the right to bring to shore by the water patrol any entrants which they deem to be incapable of competing further in the event. While in the competition area - including the beach and water environments - entrants must follow all directions of Waverley Lifeguards and Ocean Swim organiser’s officials and water safety personnel.
