North Bondi SLSC members unanimously voted to progress the rebuilding of the Clubhouse at a Special General Meeting on 20th June. By agreeing to expend further Club funds this project will now proceed to drawing & documentation stage to allow the development to go to tender early next year.

The original Clubhouse on the current site was erected in 1920. Previously the Club operated out of a shed on land near Ben Buckler and the original structure was a tent in 1906. The present Clubhouse dates to 1931 with the upstairs area added in 1979. This current building is well past its use by date and the Club has agreed to demolish this structure and rebuild a brand new Clubhouse. This plan was approved by Waverley Council early this year.

The Club’s vision is “to construct the best lifesaving facility in Australia housing the premier Surf Club in the land in an iconic & harmonious building on this landmark site”. The current plans drawn up by award winning architects Durbach Block will certainly ensure this becomes a reality. The building will blend in with the natural environment with its “weathered “look and tiled exterior that will reflect the changing light colours of the day and seasons. It is unique to Bondi Beach.

As one of the original foundation Surf Club’s back in 1906 North Bondi has grown to be one of the largest in Australia. We have over 500 active patrolling volunteers to safeguard the beach and last season providing over 22,000 hours of lifesaving service to our community. We have over 900 Nippers (members aged 5 to 14) who learn surf safety, keep fit & healthy and have fun on Sunday mornings. A key plank of the Club’s mantra is the development of our youth.

The new building will provide sate of the art facilities including a brand new emergency care room metres from the beach front; disabled access to allow us to broaden our membership base and engagement with the community, as well as complying with the multitude of regulations that are now part of modern day lifesaving. The club is looking for community help with our last stages of fundraising required for this project.

Donations of $100,000 are known as “Wally Weekes” members named after the Club’s founder and enjoy unrivalled Club membership. In addition the benefactors name will be set in a marble and granite tile inlaid on the forecourt of the new building. This prominent position next to the beach promenade will give permanent recognition to these generous donors. The Club is also offering our members a limited opportunity to purchase a wall tile with their name or family names which will be displayed in the ground floor “Hall of Champions” area. We will also be offering a “Nippers Tile” which will form a wall in the new Youth Area of the Club. Members of our community that donate $5,000 or more to our fundraising endeavours will be displayed on an honour board in the new foyer. All funds raised are banked into the rebuilding trust account which is administered by 3 trustees and donations are tax deductible.

North Bondi’s volunteer lifesavers thank you for any contribution you can make to ensure we keep your beach safe for decades to come.
